Japanese Language Proficiency Test

JLPT Test Preparation

The world's largest Japanese-language test for non-native speakers — with five levels from N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced). Master your Kanji, vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening skills.

About the JLPT Examination

The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is a standardised criterion-referenced test to evaluate and certify Japanese language proficiency for non-native speakers. It is jointly administered by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES).

Held twice a year (July and December) in 86 countries, the JLPT has become the most widely recognised Japanese language certification in the world. The test assesses language knowledge through reading and listening, evaluating whether candidates can communicate effectively in real-life Japanese situations.

Five Levels of Proficiency

The JLPT has five levels: N1, N2, N3, N4 and N5, with N1 being the most advanced and N5 the most basic. N1 requires mastery of complex Japanese across all contexts, while N5 tests understanding of basic phrases and elementary hiragana, katakana and kanji. Each level measures vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension and listening ability.

Who Recognises JLPT?

JLPT certification is recognised by Japanese universities, language schools, government agencies and major corporations in Japan and worldwide. It is often required for MEXT scholarship applications, Japanese visa processes and employment at Japanese companies globally.
